St. Nicholas Park Hosts First Bloom with the First Lady

First Lady Laura Bush watches as participants in the First Bloom project at Hamilton Grange National Memorial discover the different things -- from bugs to twigs -- that can be found when you shake the branches of a shrub. Photo taken Sept. 24, 2008.

By Mindi Rambo, NPS (National Parks Service)

Hamilton Grange National Memorial in Harlem, served as the backdrop on September 24 for the second First Bloom event in New York City. First Bloom is a National Park Foundation (NFP) program that connects children to national parks through planting and gardening projects.

First Lady Laura Bush, NPF Honorary Chair, took a tour of the Grange, which moved June 7, and received a briefing on the historic building’s restoration from Stephen Spaulding, the National Park Service’s chief of architectural preservation division for the northeast region.

Mrs. Bush joined children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harlem and local schools on the grounds below the house and talked with them at a variety of “stations” where the children were learning about different aspects of gardening. At one table, she saw how they had planted seedlings in compostable pots. Kneeling next to the students at another station, Mrs. Bush took a keen interest in what they discovered when the shook a shrub and sorted what fell onto a tarp – mostly bark and insects. She also heard about their plans, which for one boy means growing up to become an architect.

“[First Bloom’s] a way to connect kids to their parks, their closest national park. And this, the Alexander Hamilton house behind us, is one of our national historic sites,” Mrs. Bush said. “And this neighborhood is going to get to watch while this house is restored. … There’s a historical architect who’s working on it, so it will be historical restoration. And while they watch the house being restored the kids in the neighborhood, and other community members, are going to be involved in planning the site.”

First Bloom was launched in 2007 by Mrs. Bush at the NPF Leadership Summit.
The program provides children in urban environments with the opportunity to get their hands in the dirt and experience planting and gardening in their neighborhoods and our national parks. It is believed that these efforts will “plant the seeds” of conservation and environmental stewardship in the next generation. Program partners include the NPS, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and community organizations that serve children.

The previous First Bloom event in New York took place at Castle Clinton National Monument on April 21, 2008

First Lady Laura Bush arranged the introduction, when she learned about Nicholas' career plans during First Bloom at Hamilton Grange National Memorial on September 24, 2008. Plum trees planted and fence painted during It's My Park! Day

A light, but hard-working group of volunteers arrived on Saturday for It's My Park Day. Three new plum trees were planted near the upper path of the park near the Great Lawn. This area was recently home to the Park's oldest tree - a tree estimated to be almost 150 years old. Unfortunately, a strong storm last month toppled the large tree leaving a huge vacant area. It has now received 3 beautiful full plums to take its place.

Also, some of our volunteers continued the iron fence painting project along St. Nicholas Terrace. We'll continue to use volunteer opportunities like today to finish to fencing which extends all the way to 141st street (the fence is currently painted to 137th-138th Street).

Thanks to all our volunteers and thanks to our great gardener Scott Farrington, whose hard work and vision allows us to have such a wonderful park.

Pictures of the day are below.

A little helper goes a long way!

Volunteers Needed for Easter Festival

Dear Friends,

It is that time of year again for our Easter Festival. This year's event will take place on Saturday March 22nd from 2pm to 4pm on the plaza at 135th street park entrance. The purpose of this email is to remind you of this event that has been a big hit in the neighborhood for the past couple of years but also to appeal to you for help. The Friends group is in great need of volunteers to help make this event as memorable as in years past. Here is a list of items that are the most critical for volunteers:

* Raffle items - suggestions for raffle prizes
* Raffle baskets - someone willing to put together baskets to be raffled off. Shawn used flower themed baskets last year that had bulbs for planting
* Easter Bonnet Decorating - helping kids paint and decorate their Easter bonnets
* Cupcake Decorating
o volunteers for baking or buying cupcakes for decorating
(I figure we will need enough for a hundred kids or so)
o icing for decoration
o sprinkles
o jellybeans
* Face painting
o painters needed
o face paints
o face sponges
* Other Supplies
o cups
o napkins
o hand sanitizer
o face wipes
o plates
* Easter Bunny (funnest job ever)
o Someone to put on the costume and parade around for the kids. I did it last year and I am willing to do it again for a little bit but it would be nice to have someone to rotate with.

>>Get the word out: a flyer in MS Word is available for print out and posting at:

http://groups.google.com/group/Friends-of-St-Nicholas-Park/files

Please let Josh Greenberg at know if you are available to volunteer at

Tree lighting brings out Harlem's Brightest!

Last night, the Friends of St. Nicholas Park hosted their Annual Tree Lighting at the park's 135th Street Plaza.

William Mullin of the Friends MC'd the evening, and introduced the crowd to the Friends' tree ornament fundraiser. For as little as $10, an ornament with your personalized message will be hung on the park's impressive tree. Click below to fill out the form to have your message or family name displayed in vivid color on St. Nick's Tree.

http://www.stnicholaspark.org/PDFs/TreeOrnamentFundraising.pdf

The Dorothy Maynor singers from the Harlem School of the Arts and the St. Mark's Church Choir started off the entertainment and delighted the crowd with their carol singing. Then, after the countdown, Councilwoman Inez Dickens helped flip the switch to ignite the 15-foot-tall spruce tree. She had help from Linda Guy, who works in Senator Bill Perkins' office, and TV Star Tamara Tunie.

The brilliantly lit tree provided the perfect backdrop for Tamara Tunie to deliver her highly entertaining and theatrical rendition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Her voice and charm literally stopped traffic on St. Nicholas Avenue, where the street became as quiet as a Norman Rockwell painting. Then, with help from others, she launched us all into jovial caroling for the big finale of the night.

Despite the chill in the evening air, the gathering of about 40 neighborhood residents were also kept warm with constant flow of hot apple cider and hot chocolate provided by the Friends. The beverages were prepared with the help of St. Mark's Church and some of "Harv's Kids" made sure the hot stuff reached it's destination in the park, in their usual generous style. Without their help these events could not happen.

Click below to view all the photos from last night.
