Abandoned Dog Needs a Home!

This email came in from Yasmin (Nina's Mom). A nice female pit bull mix pup was found and needs a home. Details and more photos below:

I found this dog this morning and I had to turn her in to ACC. (Database record can be found here online) or go to www.nycacc.org and look up dogs that were found yesterday. She is listed.


If anyone is interested they have 72 hours in the lost and found. And then depending on how many dogs are there and if they cant get a rescue to take them they may euthanasia within 3 days. She has had a litter maybe a couple of months ago. She is no longer lactating though so maybe they'll be kinder to her.

I or should I say my dog found her in Jackie Robinson in the bushes right by the gates by the hand ball court rolled up in a small ball and shivering. She could barely walk she was shivering from the cold.I brought her in to ACC cause I couldn't leave her at home. She seems to be gentle and wanted to sniff with my dog Nina but Nina was nervous around her so I can't take her. She is a medium sized dog, extremely emaciated. She was very gentle with my dog, when I fed her she ate from my hand. I put down a food bowl and when I took it from her there was no food guarding issue. I wiped her down and cleaned her feet and there was no issue touching her in any way. And the male worker at the ACC had no issue picking her up or putting a leash on her. She seems confused but she began to relax when I brought her home. She didn't do her business in my apartment this morning either so she may be housetrained.

I fed her and gave her some water and warmed her up some before I brought her to ACC . I've been trying to contact Stray from the heart. Posh pet rescue and animal haven to see if they can pull her. Posh pets responded right away they keep a look out for her. If anyone can foster posh pets will pull her. I gave north shore a call and they were going to forward the info to whoever is in charge of adoption area I also left a message and emailed animal haven. Bide a wee NY is full but their wantagh shelter will be going there this week but no one is answering their phones. Most likely she'll get kennel cough for being there.

They tested her at ACC and I'm enclosing the listing. They said she is timid, and nervous but otherwise there are no behavior issues she is 35LBS she should be 50lBS. They haven't tested her with other dogs but they don't think that it may be an issue since she didn't react to any of the other dogs there and she did well with my dog . She does have a Mange and they are treating her for it its on her forehead she may have been scratching that may account for some of the scratches.

RIP Kansas

St. Nick's Dog Run is sad to learn about the passing of Kansas. Kansas and his Dad were one of the Dog Run regulars who helped plan, create and built our dog run. We will miss Kansas dearly. The photo above was sent by Kansas's Dad. He says "I love the attached picture of him in the dog run. Looks like he is about to get in trouble."

All,

It is with much sadness that I am writing to let you all know about the passing of Kansas. For those of you that don't know him, Kansas was the happy yellow Lab, that had a passion for searching the run for all things that dogs aren't supposed to eat and trying to be romantic whenever he could. About a month and a half ago he was diagnosed with what the vet thought was cancer and unfortunately that turned out to be correct. Kansas was great up until about last week but as is true for most of us the illness caught up with him. Earlier this week I made the decision to have him put to sleep and of course being the stubborn Lab that he was, he decided to trump me by passing away this morning, a mere 4 hours before our vet appointment.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has asked about Kansas recently. You and your dogs were all key in making his life more enjoyable, especially near the end. I know he is in a better place because he deserves to be.

December Coffee Bark - warm coffee helps the winter chill!

Eventhough it is not officially winter, the crowd at St. Nick's Dog Run were mighty chilly this morning. The dogs didn't seem to feel the winter in the air as there were lots of playing, etc.

St. Nick's Dog Run Clean Up Day This Sat. Oct 11th at 10am

Dear Friends,

We are holding the St. Nick's Dog Park Fall Clean-up Day this Saturday, October 11th from 10am to 2pm. We'll be filling in doggie dug holes, spreading new woodchips, replacing bag dispensers, and making sure the place looks great for the Fall season.

Your help is greatly needed and appreciated.

If you have a pair of work gloves please bring them. We will have some available to those who don't. Also, we will have bottled water and coffee for everyone.

It is usually better to come to the workday after you walk your dog. Dogs demand attention while in the dog run, and the workday will be more enjoyable if you can leave your dog in the comfort of his home. Of course, we understand if this is not possible and appreciate any
help you can lend.

October Coffee Bark - Fun for Fall!

There was a great turn out today at the St. Nick's Dog Run Coffee Bark. The cool weather certainly made the case for some warm coffee which went really fast (sorry for those who were a little late and could not enjoy the coffee). Thanks to all the volunteers who brought donuts, coffee (Mike that coffee was awesome this morning) and other items to make this another successful coffee bark. Mama Mia has found Temporary Home; Permanent Home still needed

Abandoned Dog Needs Our Help

Dear Friends,

A young female Pit Bull that just had babies was abandoned at the St. Nick's Dog Run a few days ago. She is a very sweet and non-aggressive Pit Bull. She has had a bath and has been taken to the vets for a check up and shots.

The dog has extremely enlarged utters since she was obviously used to breed pitbulls then adandoned right after she gave birth. She is not house broken but actually knows a few commands. She is about 1-2 years old.

If you know of any people or no-kill shelters you can contact please do so immediately or tell us so we can. Some of the caregivers from our group cannot take care of the dog any more after tomorrow morning (as many of the people have so many dogs under their care right now). Even if you could or know someone who could watch the dog until Monday or until a space opens up in a no-kill shelter that would give Sophie (who is currently taking care of Mama Mia) a big relief.

Coffee warms everyone at chilly May Coffee Bark

With temperatures feeling more like winter than Spring, St. Nick's Dog Run faithful came out for the monthly coffee bark. As sponsor of May's Coffee Bark, Diane West of New York Tails Magazine was on hand with free copies of the magazine as well as doggie bag clips and dog treats. She soon became the favorite of all the St. Nick canines. Below are some photos of the event.

Our April Coffee Bark officially opened the beginning of outdoor weather. About 20-30 dog owners and their canine companions enjoyed the beautiful spring weather on Saturday. Volunteers from Stray from the Heart arrived at our Bark to promote their fundraiser on May 28th (details below).

Coffee Bark Returns with Spring in the Air!

On Sunday, about 20-30 dog owners came out and enjoyed the nearly Spring temps and sunshine at the St. Nick's Dog Run. It was our first Coffee Bark since December and our community was looking forward to spring and welcoming the month of March. We had more donuts and coffee than ever! We even had some donuts with green sprinkles celebrating the upcoming St. Patrick's Day holiday! (Thanks Josh!).
